Cadillac has introduced their most powerful production car ever, the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, and with it, their most powerful engine, a 6.2L supercharged V8 producing 668 horsepower and 659 lb-ft of torque. This is not to be confused with Cadillac's 4.2L Blackwing V8, a twin turbocharged DOHC engine developed for the CT6-V, which is no longer in production. This video will compare the two Blackwing V8 engines. We'll cover airflow, intakes and exhausts, hot-v engines, air-to-water intercoolers, twin-scroll turbos, and discuss how twin, twin-scroll turbos can be implemented in a V8 engine.

Two important things not mentioned here in regards to performance engines and neglected by most everyone is power to weight (just the engine not car) and where the weight is (center of gravity for the said engine) ie aluminum block but 130lb supercharger up on to and out front on the car? etc there is always a lot more to consider when talking overall performance capability? would be good if you gave engine weight as well as HP, thank you.

Cadillac is right. A DRIVER'S car should have a manual transmission for driver engagement. All these sports cars and super cars nowadays with flappy paddle transmissions are cool for bragging rights on acceleration, but they're not true drivers' cars. They're just number generators. The era of the true driver's car is quickly ending. And it was killed off by drag racers and lazy people.

The coolest part of a hot V V8 engine is the use of twin-scroll turbos with a cross bank manifold. Looks like Jason had it drawn on his blackboard but didn't get into it. No matter, since Cadillac didn't use such a manifold on the Blackwing V8. Because of all the different directions of metal expansion they are super expensive to develop and make reliable, so probably best GM doesn't go there, lol.

Jason, very cool comparison!. Question: If the CT6's V8 were a flat-plane crank V8, would it have gotten away with using only one twin-scroll turbo? It would be cool to compare the exhaust pulses and turbo solutions for both flat- and cross-plane crank V8s.
    Congrats on the awesome videos.

That was interesting. Love the whiteboard explanation of twin scroll. Sad but true twin turbo twin scroll of a smaller engine is more efficient and you just turn up the boost electronically. (With a trade off in life of engine and driveability) vs supercharged being close to naturally aspirated.

its soo strange. GM either does EXACTLY what the enthusiasts want regardless of what the competition is doing (the 6.2l blackwing ct-5 v8 with a manual transmission), or they completely screw it up for larger sales numbers like the blazer/trailblazer
or they just straight up ignore their biggest competition when they dont have a model to compete with like the raptor and the TRX. i mean come on, theoretically it wouldnt take much to make a TRX competitor out of the silverado or IDEALLY the sierra (it looks way better and has a cooler brand image). just plop in the big ol' LT4 in it at least. but sense it will STILL be left in the dust, if they can, they can slap that MASSIVLY POWERFUL LT5 engine into it and it will have just 5 hp shy from the Raptor R, but have a 90 lb-ft of torque advantage! which in a big truck means more than hp, and it will also have 65 more lb-ft of torque than the TRX as well.
so if GM really comes out swinging and puts the most powerful engine they have into it, they would have slightly less power than the Raptor, have a lot more power than the TRX (if they dont put the redeye hellcat engine in it!), have almost 100 more torque than the raptor and have some 65 more torque than the TRX. IF they use that engine, and then again all they gotta do it upgrade the shocks and give it a lift thats even higher than the TRX, and give it a new wider body. its VERY possible because a company already made it! its called the Jackal, and it looks so badass! chevy or GMC just need to create this vehicle in house and i really hope they come out swinging if they do this. they have been behind for so long, and they already screwed up the blazer, they need to bring out something to make up for it. maybe they will bring it out when they to the next refresh or something, i dont care. i just want it to be worth it and for it to actually happen

Despite all the fantastic engine technology available, the classic American V8 remains a robust, compact and lightweight performer. So much so, the basic pushrod V8 architecture remains a race winning combination. It may come as a surprise to some that the classic American V8 is often limited in displacement to 5.5L and compression ratio (9 to1) and redline (as low as 6000) by sanctioning body rules to ensure adequate race competition. I'm not claiming it's the best, only that it works and that it works well enough to power performance+race cars, boats, RV's and yes, even some airplanes.

You should say “production “ in the title because otherwise this isnt close to most powerful ever. a Cadillac proprietary-developed aluminum 32-valve V16 engine displacing 13.6 liters (829 cu. in; 13,584 cc). The V16 was capable of 16.65 mpg under normal conditions. The engine was said to produce a minimum of 1,000 bhp (746 kW; 1,014 PS) and at least 1,000 lb⋅ft (1,356 N⋅m) of torque.

Jason - here's a question for a future video. Why do manufacturers need to fit overly long ratios in manual gearboxes to meet emissions requirements? My MINI Cooper grumbles about holding 60mph in 6th, and first gear runs past 35mph. From a recent road test of the 8sp auto-only BMW 128ti, "BMW claims the gearing for any manual would have had to have been overly long for emissions tests". The latest Cayman cops the same criticism of tall manual gearing. I get (or think I do) why top gear may need to be long, but why are the lower gears also so long?

Most High Class German Cars still have a V8. Lot of AMGs and some BMWs/ Audis. There are also some V12s from BMW and Mercedes. But yes, in general German Cars have smaller engines with less ccm but more turbos. As a BMW mechanic i think of the classic inline 6 cylinder engine with s twin turbo system.. (m3/m4) ...

Pure electric vehicles only make sense to city drivers and unfortunately all these decision are being made by city dwelling pricks that don't know there is more to America than cities.
