The Maserati MC20 Nettuno Engine uses dual combustion chambers, dual spark plugs per cylinder, and dual injectors per cylinder. It's packed with innovative tech, sharing commonalities with F1 pre-chamber engine technology. It's a 3.0L, twin-turbo V6 engine making 620 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. Maserati Nettuno Press Release:
"The new power unit has a V90° architecture, with a 3-litre, 6-cylinder twin-turbo, and features a dry sump (a classic solution on super sportscars). It delivers 630CV at 7500rpm and 730 Nm of torque from 3000rpm with a specific power output of 210CV/litre. The compression ratio is 11:1, the stroke is 82 mm and the bore 88 mm.
The soul of the engine is the innovative pre-chamber combustion system featuring twin-spark plugs. This technology is derived from Formula 1 and is now available, for the first time, on an engine destined for the road.
The engine has three main features:
The pre-chamber: a combustion chamber is set between the central electrode and the traditional combustion chamber and connected by a series of specially-designed holes.
Lateral sparkplug: a traditional sparkplug acts as a support to ensure constant combustion when the engine is operating at a level that doesn’t need the pre-chamber to kick in.
Twin injection system - direct and indirect: linked to the fuel supply pressure at 350bar, the system reduces noise low down on the rev range, lowering emissions and improving consumption."

    Thus far ALL Italian designed, engineered, and built cars lack a 150,000 + reliability no matter how well you maintain them. When you take your Italian car to a dealer, it will cost you $75.00 just watch the person at the desk ... sneeze. If any real work needs to be done, just give then you credit card plus empty your wallet. To put it mildly, they have a DISMAL reliability record. Their forte is in beautiful and artistic designs of anything from vacuum cleaners to cars. Put an Alfa Romeo 4C Spider (!!! body only !!! ) on a Honda chassis and now you have a beautiful and reliable vehicle. End of story.

    I had one question.
    At low load, any RPM, wouldn't it be feasible to fire the pre-chamber spark plug first and then after a short delay, the main chamber spark plug?
    The active pre chamber shoots flames and evenly spreads the combustion into the main chamber. So wouldn't it be somewhat the same case in Maserati's engine?

    why not just build a spark plug, that has the pre chamber integrated? just an extra long spark plug where the center electrode ist deep inside instead of sticking out.
    would be easier to maintenance. AND it could be offered as Aftermakret Spark Plugs for other engines too!
    I would like to see that.

    There might be something to do with materials and surface tension as well as rich fuel mixture to prevent some build-up in the Pre-Chamber for long term use.

    I saw a TV program back in the 90's where they were plotting what needs to happen to get the engines to be more efficient and clean. The original material was from the 1970's oil crisis times when the anti-smog equipment was introduced. They correctly predicted how complex the engines and transmissions need to be. I remember thinking would it be funny to create everything using vacuum tubes or transistors to show how complicated everything will get. Now would be the time. Then, a "simple" electric motor with one moving part will now replace the whole thing.

    This reminds me of pulse jet technology were essentially its like a rocket engine.

    What if the heads had this pre chamber ignition system and was nearly the same diameter of the piston and had small holes and above that existed the valves and the spark plug and the injectors. So essentiaply the piston will get the most out of this. Because a rocket engines injector system does this the same way learned this from Scott Manly who explains in vivid detail how rocket engines work. This is genius. There is more pressure then there would be if it was one giant explosion. The raptor engines use this and so do the engines on most if not all space craft. If we use this in cars it could help so much more with fuel consumption.

    Did I miss so rtbobg? Wouldn't being able to run the motor leaner or more efficiently with less fuel, why use more file for the CC? Wouldn't it be better to design to the point of not needing one?

    It looks alot like motor out of my 604 Peugeot engine that Renault collaborated with Volvo, but was carbonated and had a poor transition so it had to speed, stop and go!!! The primary and secondary were two separate carbs, a one barrel and a two barrel!

    The real reason the main chamber spark plug exists is at low loads, the piston cannot "compress" the mixture into the prechamber. A piston is actually getting sucked upwards at part throttle, and then at TDC the mixture may only reach atmospheric pressures. The engine simply wouldn't run smoothly or at all at part throttle.

    I like it...it's a good idea. Sadly these engines will never run more than 20k miles or so if even that much.
    Maybe it's engine us great for now but once it fails...jesus...how much energy did you put into building the world's most temporary car?
    If they can keep it going for 200k, then it might matter a bit more.

    active is highly used in marine gas engines. if u combine it with propan butan it gives u a good amount of enviroment points. of course u have to deal with high EGT and use better oxidation catalyst

    They should have threaded that whole pre chamber into the head. The ports will have to be cleaned of carbon with the typical low-load, low rpms supercars see in real use. Or they’ll need to program in an automatic interval for an ‘Italian tuneup”. That’s how I used to keep my Fiat’s plugs cleaned.

    It looks to me like that prechamber can be mostly cleaned by removing the sparkplug and using something resembling a chamber cleaning brush for a rifle. That would not clean the ports, but I don't think those will be very likely to clog, though they might erode from the speed and pressure of the gas flowing through them.

    Moral of the story: Bring on the EV version!! The complexity of this engine is ridiculous, which in turn will only bring reliability issues in the long run.

    Thank you, what a great video! I am about to buy the MC20 and wanted to break it down to the smallest detail. Given this, your video explains one of the biggest questions - why on the videos of the car the RPMs fall so slowly. Right now, I guess its could be ECU strategy for either warming up the catalytic converter (the car has just started and the test pilot gave it revs) or it could be emission/noise strategy for vehicle being stationary (like Porsche, which opens exhaust valves strictly under load when moving). The engine doesn't appear to be so "sluggish" once it gets going doing rounds around Modena square.

I had the idea of replacing the spark plug with another device which enables to fire the entire combustion chamber almost instantaneously (let’s say in less than one millisecond as an order of magnitude).     How does Maserati's central spark plug see a richer mixture than the rest of the chamber, when there is no injector near it? At best, it will be the same lean mixture. If not a lean mixture, then the prechamber is only there to provide hot flame jets that carry multiple flame fronts into the main charge. Normally, a single flame front is less likely to knock, than two flame fronts slapping into each other. Perhaps many smaller flame fronts don't produce significant knock?
    Then again, aircraft piston engines have dual spark plugs and ignition systems in case one fails....

    Too much brain! You're missing the gestalt of the mixture - in the active case the front mixes with the lean mixture allowing for some interesting propositions. In the second case, you're eliminating a single (or focused) flame front and creating a distributed one that consumes without the possibility of a "clap" (knock). It's almost an exercise in sound management.

    Too late to be sinking money into designing and patenting large powerful petrol engines.
    Making an expensive production car more expensive, with more parts that are patented.
    I'm wondering is this the legacy Maserati is trying to leave behind? It feels to me that somebody has been clinging to this design for too long and to release it now, it feels almost archaic.

    Yes. Every high performance/aftermarket rotary application has the oil metering system deleted and uses TCW-3 or similar premix. I've had a rotary engine fail because one of those oil metering lines broke.

    This prechamber concept was done in San Diego in 1992 and tested at SDSU.
    The issue was temperature of brass prechamber.
    Because of a hot pre-chamber NOX was not as good as it could have been.
    Also pre-ignition once hot enough.
    looks like cooling fluid channels is enough to solve by removing enough heat.
    pre-chamber surface area to volume vs fuel burned inside prechamber drive prechamber temps.
    cool stuff.
    Pre-chamber volume robs main chamber of compression if energy-pressure of fuel and air inside pre-chamber is not fully transferred to main chamber. Hot pre-chamber hints of that being an efficiency hit.
    So where the power gain?
    In the delayed power profile.
    It takes time for the pressure to get up the spark plug. This helps reduce pre-ignition.

      This time allows the crank to turn a few more degrees without high pressure from main combustion flame. Since it is delayed and just starting to propagate across chamber after existing orifice, even with accelerated burn rates, the pressure profile is delayed at first, then catches up later. this produces more power because any pressure made early does not make much power until the crank has turned the "corner". Or for math folks sin of 6 degrees or less, rounds down to zero.
