Can you use synthetic oil in old cars? Can synthetic oil cause leaks?
Sponsored by Mobil 1 motor oil - You can find Mobil 1 synthetic at a wide variety of retailers and service stations near you. bit.ly/2FOBrVJ
We’re tackling many heavily debated subjects about motor oil in this video and learning how specially formulated motor oil can help new and old engines add more miles to the odometer! Can you use synthetic motor oil in old cars? Can synthetic oils cause leaks in old cars and engines? Where did the idea originate that synthetic oils are not compatible with old engines? If your car is consuming a lot of oil, should you use a thicker oil grade? Finally, when should you use a high mileage oil? I spent time discussing these questions and more with Mobil 1 engineers. Watch for all the details! #Mobil1Partner

Tbh the video is in most parts right, but there are some specific Motors like the M113 from Mercedes which are known to have problems eexclusively due to synthetic oil. Always make sure to inform yourself befor changing your oil.

75k miles is not high milege :D
Around 150k miles is good :D

I'm glad I'm moving to an electric car in a month and won't have to worry about internal combustion engines anymore, lol.

Me and a few mechanics we knew we're blending oils before came out as a durablend mixed and as engine builder mechanic machinists, I found that engines love durablend the moving Parts love synthetic but the piston Rings seal better with oil durablend is a great option high mileage is good with an engine over a certain amount of miles
Bob Olson
Just like a model A if you put that into a Model A you'll ruin the car if you do not put synthetic oil in old cars
Bob Olson
Well I guarantee you can't use synthetic oil in old cars I know that for a fact I've been working on old cars for a long time there is detergent that cleans the inner part of the car when it drives that is the worst thing for new old cars because they're not designed for that type of oil the only oil you should be putting in an old car is Rotella T.....
Kristen Sorensen
If you use the factory recommended weight oil it does not matter. A worn out oil burning engine is going to wreck your Cat at some point. Seals are not compatible with ethanol either. Proper maintenance is always the right thing to do. Nice👍

Motor cycles that their motors sharing oil with a wet clutch? What car/truck automotive synthetic oils can be used if so, rather than having to buy and use what is labeled as Motorcycle synthetic oil?

I got it then lost it got it again but eventually my brain fried and l forgot what you said....

Yeah, yeah yeah.... So technically speaking u stuck to the script, told the truth and yes your correct on all fronts. Curious though.... Would Mobile have coughed for the oil if you had a slightly different account. I mean really, at the time synthetic oils came out I heard the exact same account in the Anyway the thing that I'd like to point out is that these oils are made and developed in Europe where the weather is very different to Australia drip or behave in have different properties in different climates and to be taken into account when selecting a motor oil just as much as this state of your engine. I personally find that I'm changing oils and filters a lot more and costing me more when I use synthetic oils regardless of the condition of engine.! So is a ploy in part so motor oil companies can ensure the people buy more of the product. IT'S STANDARD BIG BUSINESS 101!!

Question: Why doesn't my local petrol station no longer warn me not to buy a Synthetic oil (I always wanted Mobil 1) for my old car as it would cause my engine to blow up? Answer: Because they now only sell sandwiches, hot drinks etc rather than a range of oils, or any oil at all. [So I buy my Mobil 1 from an on-line supplier]
Robert Magee
Use the correct weight oil...oils are better than ever .

Jason your videos are always top notch. I like them because I learn stuff, and you never over burden our ears with annoying music that so many others feel is needed---instead you give s more information than us "regular guys" can mentally absorb in one viewing. So I generally watch them more than once.

Been using Castrol GTX for years and years. My old truck on the farm has 284,884 miles with no major work. Had to install a new $117 alternator last month though.

Not in a classic vw engines like the bug/bus/ghias. The flat four engine blocks are made with magnesium and due to the àcidity of synthec oils it will destroy the block

Not sure what happened but when I changed from synthetic oil in my S-10 back to conventional I haven't noticed as many spots under my truck nor are the spots as big. Maybe it's healing up?
anthonysgarage
Always enjoy your videos. Unfortunately, this one didn't touch on engines with flat tappet cams.
My understanding is the pre-roller cam engines need an oil with a high Zinc content, do to the two flat surface, metal on metal contact. Lots of options on the topic, but it does seem that the motor oils available with a high Zinc content tend to be conventional.
Randy Coulon
I've lost 2 engines to extreme blowby. Each less than 1 week after putting kendall syn. Blend. Now they were both the first oil change I had given them
Randy Coulon
Shoot. posted too early... 1 was 87 ford 2.3 another 80 ford 4.9 inline 6. I was 18 at the time. And just got rid of them. 33 now and I've pondered why from time to time. Best I can figure is they weren't maintained properly by previous owners had deposits holding rings to cylinder walls and new oil cleaned it out.. I don't have hate towards synthetic oil but what I took away from the experience is if your "new to you" 30+ year old engine has a questionable past, and you can't afford a rebuild, stick to conventional. That hasn't failed me yet
Jeremy Cubs
My car requires 10w-40 semi synthetic, I say nah 5w-30 would be better and after 80k miles the engine sounds like new 😁

I've always had good luck going up a "weight" on high mileage engines. It stops leaks and provides more protection on loose clearances.

I have a 2000 Ford Excursion RWD V10 6.8. It has 210,000 miles on it. My question is can I switch to synthetic high mileage oil. I drive it less since the pandemic. About 2yrs. now.
Daniel Marshall
OH YES.... I had a 1992 VW Golf GTi G60 and used Mobil 0w40, the car was 10+ years old when I had it. Easy peasy all I had to do was keep topping up the oil, no oil change required, did 80k miles in 6 years smiles all round.

What about Old Motorcycles? (bikes use the same oil for the transmission)

So no mention of zinc for old flat tappet cams ... Which modern oil has almost none ... Last cam i pulled looked like it had been in a camp fire

Well I have a classic mini with a moderately tuned engine (90bhp vs 63 out of the factory), the engine and gearbox share the oil. I put 20w50 castrol classic because putting synthetic thick oil makes for a strange shifting experience. From what I could gather, synthetic is just too "good" for that gearbox and synchromesh have hard time doing their work with less friction when the selector fork is pressing on them. I guess it may be specific, but ask old folks, sometimes they know a lot.
Banannaman
Ask Mobil 1 why they use a class 3 base oil instead of a class 5
Bina Garten
Old Engines did not have catalytic converors so a high Zinc content was not a problem. With the Catalyst the Zn has a detrimental effect. In the case of say a CVH engine the hydraulic tappets are flat, as in old Subarus, and so the the cam, valve gear wear with the newer oils. That is why a ZInc rich oil, or additive is recommended with classic cars.
Joe Flo
I'm a retired lubrication Consultant and Synthetic engine oils aren't created equal. While the synthetic chemical makeup will last longer but the viral additives wear out and breakdown. The problem with many synthetics is the oil blenders use conventional additives and as a result should be changed as often as conventional oil. Lubricant manufacturers make changes often making it difficult to keep up with all them.
Engine oil such as Pennzoil, Quaker State, Valvoline and Kendal has been bought out by big oil companies and the CEO's make bonuses by producing profits not selling a quality product
I always preferred the Lubrication Engineers lubricants. They will cost three times as much but will last at least three times as long, the additives are the most supreme available. Older cars owners be warned it cleans the gunk left by the previous oils, it will plug breather caps, simply change them if you see oil usage. As it cleans your engine you could see more oil consumption but over time it will subside. My old truck used to use a quart every 500 miles now I get 2,000 miles. In the long term it saves you money if you want your vehicle to last a longtime.
Eric Denau
Why taking a risk? There are even some new engines made where it will stand black on white use mineral oil only! Some guys will not belive it and changes over to superduper slic syntethic and the engine starts to leak out oil.

Long time ago my buddy switch to synthetic oil his old Chevrolet Chevette.. Two days later he called me to pick him up from highway.. Engine was pissing oil... But that was long time ago and who knows how many miles was on Chevette. I guess You can switch to synthetic if car is not to old...To me make no sense to switch on old car- it's junk anyway.

Albeit recent price drops, synthetic oils are still more expensive than conventional oils. For my '97 CR-V with close to 1/2 million kilometres (300,000 miles) on the roads, it just doesn't make sense to use synthetic as I've used conventional oil, mostly 5W30 Castrol, and now high mileage conventional oil with age-proven results.

When you said the oil is sprayed into the combustion chamber in a rotary engine my first thought was "why not just mix it in the fuel" then you said that racers do that.

Will synthetic oil expose leaks? Blah blah blah YES.

Real synthetic oils cost about 100 dollars per litre.

We know a person that bought a 1994 vehicle with about 160, 000 miles on it. He checked out that vehicle very closely before buying it. IT HAD NO OIL LEAKS ANYWHERE and ran good. He bought it and changed the engine oil and filter using 5-20 fully synthetic oil and a recomended synthetic type oil filter after approximately 2000 miles of use later.GUESS WHAT?? It started leaking oil from the engine oil pan gasket and the engine rear main seal about 2 months and or approximately 1000 miles later. THERE HAS TO BE SOME SOME EXPLANATION FOR THIS HAPPENING????
Wooley689
Okay, this is a lot of talk that sounds good, no how about we see some older engines change over to synthetic and test the consumption and leak issues.
Edgy00
0W-40:Mobil 1 is the recommended oil for my Porsche 911–and it’s been using oil from brand new at 1 quart per 1000 miles. Has now for 123,000 mile.

Had a 81 Firebird and used 10w 30 Mobil 1 this was in 1988 . I changed over because a friend suggested it. So I change the oil and filter started the car. Holy hell ,the engine rattled like it had no oil. I had a friend take me to the exchange and get more oil ,pennzoil 10w 30 ,went back drained the Mobil 1 ,put on a new filter and the pennzoil started up no problems. I saw several people use synthetic in the 80s and 90s in General Motors cars and they all leaked like a sieve. They weren't leaking before! My Dad had a 92 LSC mark 7 and at around 25,000 miles someone convinced him to change to Mobil 1 and within 5,000 miles the car was leaking and got worse mileage . I had him switch back and within 2 oil changes (6000 miles) the leaks mostly stopped but not completely. It was common knowledge in the Mustang 5.0 community not to use synthetic oil, those who experimented had the same problem as my Dad with his Mark vii, that car had the 5.0 HO motor as well. You might be able to change over the last 15 years or so to synthetic but American cars from the 80s and 90s didn't like a change to synthetic after they were used to a conventional oil. Just my experiences.

Is 2007 Honda Accord considered old?

Thanks for posting this. It contained quite a bit of useful information. Back in the OLD days, rear main seals were made of rope, and as time went on, those seals turned into almost like wood, and the sealing swelling issues failed, causing those seals to leak.

Like the old days when sumps got filled with banana peel to stop the leaks .. you topped up the oil every time you got petrol .

Switching from conventional oil to synthetic caused leaks in a couple of old cars that I owned too. That is the main reason many people won't switch in older cars (70s-90s). In a newer car, I would only run Synthetic.

Using syn oil s in older cars? Why would you want to?

I am concerned with Zinc no longer in motor oil on gas engines as it kills the Catalytic Convertor so I can see why it was removed. Diesels don't have that issue so there is zinc in the oil, I have been using Diesel Synthetic oil in my air cooled engines and older equipment that are gas. Is there a problem, as so far I haven't had any issues that I can observe. Can anyone with real authority provide me a answer.
Rob S
Hasn't anyone noticed that most oil companies have quietly switched to synthetic blends?? It seems harder to find straight up conventional oil anymore.
Gary Frye
STP still has conventional oil. Auto zone has it.
Bob Morgan
Ran into that situation at Walmart earlier today.
Bob Davenport
I think what you are seeing is that the price difference between conventional and synthetic is narrowing over time, making it less and less important for oil companies to provide conventional as a "cheaper" alternative to synthetic for consumers where money is tight.

Is the old fact no longer valid, that the strength of the oil film is weakened a lot more for fully synthetic oil than for mineral oil, when it is diluted with petrol?
G S
I think I've tried using synthetic 10W-30 oil in my car that has a mid-70's 350 Chevy engine in it several times for one reason or the other and both times it has caused it to start using more oil than normal. I normally use the 10W-40 oil recommended by GM so it could be the viscosity difference, but the only way to test that would be to use conventional 10W-30 since synthetic oil doesn't seem to come in 10W-40. It's easier just to keep using what the manufacturer recommended.
Antonio Hosino
ON THOSE GM REAR MAIN SEALS , THEY SHRINK OVER TIME , THE HIGH MILEAGE 75 K ON UP MILES MOBIL 1 WILL RECONDITION THE SEAL AND CAUSE IT TO SWELL TO STOP THE LEAK , I WOULD NOT GO BACK TO CONVENTIONAL OR STANDARD MOBIL 1 , IF YOUR ENGINE HAS 75 K , PLUS THE ADDITIVE IN THE HIGH MILEAGE MOBIL 1 WILL CONTINUE TO CONDITION THE SEALS AS THE ENGINE INCREASES MILEAGE AND AGE !!!
Tom Midd
Is Synthetic Motor Oil Bad For Old Cars? Yes, and new cars. We call it gimmick oil in the aviation industry. Mobil Oil Company came to market with synthetic motor oil around 1975 and I still have the old marketing hype on how much better and cheaper it will be. 👎

I have built hundreds of gas and diesel engine s since 1976..

When you say that synthetic oil certifications meet seal compatibility standards, how far back would that go? Would we be able to use synthetic in a 1960's motor, for instance?

Flat tappet and air cooled engines need Millers Race oil as it has enough ZDDP in it which has been taken out of todays oils due to cat converters etc. Use mineral oil to run in for 500 mls then switch to Classic Sport. Easy!

Had a old galaxy 500 back in the 1970s that burned a quart per 100 miles. I just used my dads used tractor oil which was years old and white with sludge. I’d get the car down to 120 miles per quart:) ahh, the good ole days😂 by the way, the quarter panels were half gone from rust:)
steve rugerguy
I put synthetic oil in a 2006 equinox with absolutely no leaks at all.....within 2200 miles, oil was leaking from rear main seal, front timing cover seal, and around the sides of the oil pan.....pouring....not a little drop.....so I determined the seals had gotten hard over time and the sealing ability was not good enough to seal off the more slippery synthetic oil.....i switched back to conventional high mileage..... still leaking....it had 99000 on it when I switched.Big mistake...now I gotta replace seals that were completely dry before the switch.
Austin Bronson
The w stands for winter not weight so theres no such thing as 40 weight the larger number is viscosity when cold

can you check and see if there' s any vegetable oil you can use in your 2 stroke chainsaw so your not breathing in pertroleum fumes all day. I'd rather inhale vegetable oil. might be healthier. inhaling chainsaw fumes prolly makes you age faster like smoking does.

Just have to match additives that the engine thrived on originally. Some stigma is reflective of backyard engine builds and not properly setting up all parameters on initial start-up/brake-in properly. Yes, classic engines with flat tappet cams do thrive and require high zink especially on start up. The same folks that wiped out a cam in an FE series motor, were cranking it dry several times before it fired. Operator problems a lot of times. And don't blame oil for the late 70s through the 80s murdering your engine/ cam. Let's face it, those engine were trash.

I wonder if Mercedes-Benz has changed their recommendation not to use synthetic oils in the m198 3 l engine used in the 300 series cars of the 50s

Most of your "Full synthetic" oils start with non synthetic " dino" oil as the base. Was not like this years ago, but with all of the cost cutting going in this world its the case. This includes most but not all mobil 1 oil weights. Only amsoil and a few other manufacturers start with 100% synthetic oil base. It's a FACT.

While you are at the mobile one lab, ask one of the old-timers why mobile one was not compatible with piston engine aircraft engines.
