The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N now comes with two transmission options: a 6-speed manual transmission, or an 8-speed dual clutch transmission. Which begs the question, which transmission should you pick? In this video we'll explain how manual transmissions work, as well as how dual clutch transmissions work.     A manual can launch at whatever revs you want, how do you dump the clutch in a DCT? If you have to push more than one button, that's a deal breaker.

    Is there an engineering (not marketing)reason that there are not more sequential transmissions in performance cars? Seems like a much simpler , cheaper and lighter weight solution than the dual clutch. It could be automated for people who want that, like the MR2 Spyder — just more aggressive logic than in that car. Maybe could even enhance it with a clutch to make it easier to skip over a gear, or to stop at a light. Would it be possible to have a ZERO —Just toothless — gear to act as a neutral? It seems that the MR2 automatic failed cause it was badly executed. Still seems like it was a great concept. Can you explain?

    Another advantage of DCT’s (or automatics) is resale value because of usability. Only about 15% of the population can drive a manual and so when you sell or trade your car that is your market. Also, you might love a manual but your spouse or SO cannot drive one so their car is down for some reason they cannot drive yours. You have to drive them. I have had both, manuals pretty exclusively on sports cars, automatics for daily drivers but I love the newer dual clutches. I have had three cars with them including a Hyundai Kona and they are generally great. The 7-speed dry DCT in the Hyundai is not as good as this one in the Veloster and overheats more easily but it still moves.

    I sold high end luxury cars for 15 years. Sold Hyundai the last 5 years of my career back in 2010. Saw the new Sonata and liked it very much. Then Hyundai came out with some other winners like the Elantra, Tucson, and new redesigned Santa Fe. Also loved the Genesis line of cars that has really taken off as of late.

    Both are great until you need to replace the clutch. Manual is way easier and no need to reset the computer to relearn and won't need expensive special tool to remove and replace the clutches.

    Your explanations are very interesting but most of your driving you are driving in traffic, it’s not changing gears 1-2-3-3-4-5-6. it’s 1-2-0-1-2-3-0-1-2-3-4-0. Stopping so many times kills the clutch and changing clutch cost double than manual car and it’s something that you don’t have in regular automatic. People that do only city driving with dual clutch transmission change clutch more than once a year

    Thank you for the explanation. Do DCT’s have a clutch pedal to push? If I understand there is no clutch pedal with on the DCT. You would shift through the gears with paddles or a tap of the shifter forward / backward without pressing a clutch pedal... right?

    The mDCT was a 2500.00 option on my BMW M2 but the performance is so good that it's an excellent trade-off for me. I did a lot of shifting as a kid but now I want to waft along and take it easy.

    The power band of my 2004 VW TDI is from about 1,500 rpm to 2,500 rpm. It has a five speed manual transmission. Shifting at 2,200 rpm is common except for the 1 to 2 shift. I sometime skip a gear in light load conditions.
    I learned to drive on cars with three and four speed transmissions.
    An engine's power band is too narrow if more than five forward gears are needed

    Gets to the heart of the matter at 8:33 . Tough choice for me. I've never owned an automatic and the only time I drive one is when I rent a car. Numbers are important to me although I've never come close to seeing the top speed of any car I've owned. I equate 140 lbs. lighter with being more nimble. On the other hand I'd like that 0-62mph in the 5's (with the DCT) and acceleration is a trait we see everyday. But the bottom line is fun isn't it? Yep, I think I'll pick engagement and fun over a half second faster to 62; manual transmission it is. Also since only 18% of Americans drive a manual it's a built in theft deterrent. Thanks guys.

    Drive a regular Veloster since 2103 and love it. Gets excellent gas mileage and for the first few years I received a lot of positive comments about the styling, not so much any more as there are alot more on the road. It would be great if they made a AWD version of the N model.

    Why would you ever need multiple final drive ratios for a single transmission? Why wouldn't they just pick one FD ratio, and then adjust the individual gear ratios accordingly to get the same effect?

    I just hope buyers of the dct don't experience the same problems we manual drivers have with faulty transmissions. I own an i30n and Engaging 6th gear is a real game of luck sometimes. Still waiting for Hyundai to fix this issue.
    If the dct was available 1,5 years ago when I bought the car, I would surely have gone for that.

    Jason, hope you get the opportunity to test drive the other upcoming N models. Not a fan of the Veloster and will be very interested in the Elantra & Kona N. I will have to admit halfway through your video I thought "hope there isn't a test". The slower less efficient manual transmission for me

    Manual is best as it not ran by a computer. computer suck in cars a real car has no computer and a real dash no fing tv screen on you dash no cell phone charger just a good real ride not all the new crap rides no fing cameras are needed and a real am fm radio with a real tape player as disks players suck the best tapes wear 8 tracks

    My biggest worry is that in that momentary time where both clutches are engaged its causing them to slip some till one fully takes over, it is causing excessive wear. I have a DSG with 104k on it and wonder about it's life span.

    Based on the footage (@ 0:30), the Autobahn drive was, if not illegal, then certainly impolite. There's nobody in the right lane being passed by you, so you should be in the right lane. Pretty inconsiderate behavior towards the guy who could be coming up behind you at 230mph in his Veyron!

    9:36 When was the last time you tried to bump start a car? If your battery is too low, you wont have enough to power up the ECM and pulse the injectors, so bump start wont work except in a very narrow range of conditions where you still have enough battery for the ECM, but not quite enough to start the engine.

    Im confused why theres 2 different final drives for every other gear. Why wpuld you want 3.8 for 1st and 2nd (great for acceleration) and then 3rd and 4th is 2.7 (not as good for accel)???

    This was immensely infiormative and was great to watch. Could you possibly do a comparison between the 3 cylinder engines BMW is using on their mini coopers, new 1 series and in the BMW R8 and compare that to something comparative? Sublimely good engine for a 3 cylinder which is refined well but hardly talked about technically!
    would love to know about the transmission of the mini f56 models!

    Well explained, but one major Disadvantage of the DCT is that it is controlled by a computer and the program it is running. Many DCTs will prevent upshift & downshift that will not cause redline and will automatically upshift & downshift when in manual 'M' mode (i.e., PDK), hence there is really no true manual mode at all. A manual gearbox doesn't have that problem.

    Anybody else wondering why alternating gears operate on different final drive ratios?
    Logistics aside, I'd have thought it would make sense to have a more torque focused ratio for lower gears and less conversion and thus less loss in higher gears...
    Can anybody here explain the implementation in the Hyundai N-DCT ??

    Perhaps you will analyze the process: a return bearing is inserted into the bicycle pedal axis (freewheel without backlash). In the working sector, the torque increases and the radius of the pedal is increased. It could be very interesting for everyone. Thanks.

    *I'm sorry but a hyundai isn't a real sports car* . They are like copy cat generic knock offs of BMWs MBs and other cars like they had a hyundai that looked just like a jaguar called the xjs300 instead of the jaguar xj300 they even had the same shitty reliability. Knock off cars. I drove a new one with a tiptronic knock off transmission and shifting from 2nd to 1st was so off that I nearly got rear ended because the ratio was so bad. Better to buy a used sports car then a new hyundai

    Thank you to the companies that give people the choice of manual or DCT. I thoroughly enjoy my DCT car and will never own another manual transmission car. I drive my car in manual mode most the time, but when I don't even want to think about shifting, I let the car do it.

    I bought my Hyundai i40 1.7L turbo diesel 2016 with a DCT transmission in it. It has gone long at 190000km. Anyone know about the quality of the 7-speed DCT transmission from Hyundai? The only thing I've noticed so far is when the car is cold and I start driving. It's then feels rougher and like it slips. Wondering if an DCT transmission oil change would help it to feel a little smoother when it's cold started? Any hacks of getting the temperature up on the oil. Like haveing the gear selector in N(neutral) or P(park) for some time to warm it up faster before I drive away? It feels like it takes longer for it to get it to change into 2nd gear as well when cold. Otherwise with the 1.7L CRDi with DCT feels awesome when I accelerate it fast in the sport mode. I'm happy with it so far.

    I personally find that highly boosted 4-cylinder engines feel terrible with a DCT. Without a torque converter to let the turbo spool up, you end up with clutch slip off-boost and massive lag. The shift time difference between even the best DCTs (Porsche PDK) and industry-standard torque converter automatics (ZF 8HP) is imperceptible in regular driving and I would take a torque converter over a DCT for a daily driver for reasons of better drivability, durability and lower maintenance.

    Just one thing that i'm wondering is with the dual clutch transmission. When in first 1 and and 2 are meshed. then shifting only takes a clutch swap. but in second 2 and 3 are meshed. But does that mean that going from second to fist the synchroniser has to change from 3 to 1 first? and then swap the clutch resulting in a much slower down shift than upshift?

    After having a zf-8 in my 2016 a6 that needed complete replacement around 30k miles at a cost of 12k billed to Audi cpo and then started to act up again two months later .... then wife’s 2016 s5 dual clutch started to act up I had enough of these complex transmissions. We do not beat on our cars at all. I went to a manual Tacoma and she to a model 3 performance. Either a manual or no transmission for me

    From my perspective the advantage of a manual is threefold. 1st is the ability to skip gears. I hate having to go through multiple actions to get to the gear I want. Which brings up the 2nd advantage, not having to "remember" whether I have made 2 downshifts or 3. The final advantage to me is a spin off of the second, I can tell which gear I am in just by the feel of where the gearshift is, I don't have to look at a readout to tell me thus not having my concentration interrupted at an inopportune time. It might be argued also that in a track enviorenment the "quicker" lap time may be offset with the possibility of being abke to stretch an extra lap out if the fuel or having a fractionally faster refuel time. Besides, they are more fun!

    Eventually, there will be an autonomous vehicle that drives faster than a human with a DCT. Will that be better? No, because it's driver involvement, not lap times, that makes it better. There's a pleasure to driving a manual that is absent in the DCT, regardless of how fast it shifts.

    i have a 2020 sonata with the 1.6T (thanks to this channel) it also has a 7 speed DCT, love the package but slow city driving can be a little jolty from the transmission shifts, but that's what makes highway merging so fun. wish there was a sport mode and calm mode for the transmission
