Deep dive into the 2022 Subaru BRZ 2.4L Boxer engine. This is a naturally aspirated version of the 2.4L turbo coming out of the Subaru Ascent. In this video we'll look at how it stacks up versus the previous BRZ engine, discuss why it's a good decision to keep it naturally aspirated, look at the torque curve, discuss wheel torque, and look into Toyota's D-4S direct plus port injection fuel system, as well as the advantages of such system.
Subaru's Press Release:
"Running counter to the current trend of power over precision, the 2022 Subaru BRZ focuses on simplicity and fun. Designed to deliver an unmatched driving experience, the all-new BRZ features a new and more powerful 228 horsepower 2.4-liter horizontally opposed engine. Sitting low in the chassis, the Subaru BOXER’s unique design allows the BRZ to achieve a Center of Gravity (CoG) even lower than the previous BRZ and on par with exotic hyper-cars. The ultra-low CoG is critical to delivering unrivaled handling, with a low polar moment and quick reaction to driver inputs. The 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine redlines at 7,000 RPM and delivers a 15-percent increase in torque. The 2022 BRZ will be offered in both Premium and Limited trims and is available with two transmission choices; a standard six-speed manual or an available six-speed automatic with a new Sport mode designed for more aggressive driving. The new Sport mode allows for more rapid downshifts with automatic throttle blipping and utilizes yaw sensors to hold the transmission in a lower gear during hard cornering to maximize performance.
Despite its sporting intentions, the 2022 Subaru BRZ does not sacrifice everyday comfort and practicality. The 2+2 seating and folding rear seats create a useful cargo area that has space for carrying a mountain bike, golf clubs, or even four race tires and tools for track days. Utilizing aluminum for the roof, front fenders and hood, the 2022 Subaru BRZ has an estimated curb weight of just under 2,900 lbs., delivering on its promise of accessible performance.
The BRZ’s bold new styling is as impressive as its handling prowess. The overall impression is modern, agile and powerful, with focused and functional aerodynamic details. The tidy coupe design is just over an inch longer and almost half an inch lower than its predecessor, resulting in a low and wide frontal area set off by large functional air intakes. The grille is set low and is capped by proud fender arches that allow just enough room for suspension points. A narrowed greenhouse accentuates the bold fender flares and the roofline features a subtle “double bubble” appearance, a nod to vintage racing cars.
The aggressive design flows into bold front fenders with a large side vent. The functional side vent reduces drag by ducting air from under the hood and fenders. The released air is directed to a side sill spoiler that creates downforce at speed. A small fin at the back of the rear-wheel arch also assists in airflow adding stability at speed. At the rear of the car, the large rear fenders and wider track flow into dual exhausts for a low and wide stance. This visual heft is lightened by a narrower greenhouse and rear hatch which flow into a dramatic upturned “ducktail” rear spoiler."

Your port and direct injection colors are mixed up :)

It needs a turbo simply because it sounds better with a turbo.
Amonikable Bandoquillo
Max torque at 3700 rpm compared to 6400 rpm in the old model. 'Nuff said.
Justin Guerrero
After watching this I have a question. Wit the new torque at lower rpm, does this mean once we have to shift earlier now and stay away from high revs ?
NomisIsGozulike
I really like the enthusiasm! Especially the engineering explanation. Helps for the job and for the joy
Peter Mannion
First time I've seen this guy, really enjoyed the video!

Man I’ve never seen someone break it down like this this is awesome. I had a FRS but now I own a Hyundai Genesis 2.0. There’s something about the FRS,BRZ,86 platform I can’t escape. Seriously thinking of trading my Hyundai and buying a BRZ and just throw mods at it.
Wyatt Elkins
Just came here to say that yes, it should have a turbo, cause if you pull up to one that does has a turbo then welcome to Gapplebee's..
hAk
the moment you see that whiteboard behind him, you know this is going to be a long lecture...
Less Talk, More Delicious
Does the new 2022 BRZ/86 generation have more suspension/alignment adjustability now? ...like camber, caster, etc.?
Or, is it still the same and still requires a slew of expensive aftermarket parts for basic alignment? Lol
Kyle Schueler
Would be sick with a sti engine
Jason Rebelo
@ShoryukenDatAzz Id like to support that comment that i currently have two utility vehicles, an e46 that the lady doesnt touch and a miata that i recently sold... we were going to get a V8 mustang as a shared daily sports car and it just flat out isnt cheap like these haha... theres a good chance BRZ is top of the list (nothing wrong with miata. loved it. buy it. had for 3 years great culture) but our next daily sporty car needs to check all the boxes including being able to stop for groceries on the way home and the miata got the snip in this area which made it WAY less usable. FUN and a great 2nd or 3rd car - hell i work for Mazda theyre awesome. but in my personal life the V8 sounds good but i aint paying that depreciation when i just want a fun to drive daily.. BRZ you are looking good :) --- PS. all you people talking about sports coupe cars. it is one. so is ANY 6spd RWD car. no matter BHP thats what a sports car is. ALSO. PSS. the miata and corvette are roadsters. no back seat means not a sport coupe it is a different class of vehicle :) .. go E46 M3 if you want the best daily sport coupe ever made IMP but pay to play on the used market friends. gambo gambo or go over pay for new heavy cars. (mustangs still sick its just not cheap like this though)

Put it this way, the new BRZ has the same amount of horsepower that the 2002 WRX had, just minus a turbo.
The rear wheel drive, lightweight, 6 speed manual, sounds like a blast to me 👍

*** the colors in the port and direct injection are flipped. Big fan of the videos. Keep up the good work!

This engine is a failure like the last BRZ and GT86... idk why they dont put a god damn turbo in it... i mean 228HP in 2022 for a sports car?? It should be minimum 300HP. My Question to Subaru why should i buy this over the new Toyota Supra?
Subaru has left the chat.
victor070
Cause it throws a rod without it
Michael Dunn
I could be wrong but it looks like you have the wrong colours for the direct and port injection showing on the cyl picture, the direct should be red :)
Roberto Enrique
good vid, i feel like going back to a engineering classroom watching your vid.... you can beat a NA in power response with EV. Of course you know that, just happened to catch that.
horus kan
on the cylinder head drawing, the port injector and direct injector colors are mixed. The port injector should be blue, and the direct injector should be red. It was a bit confusing at first while you explained the port, port+direct and direct injection strategies until I figured that out

11% power gain from a 17% increase in displacement, what a waste of time

Now it's making Mk7.5 GTI power, which will help immensely.

G'Day..thank you for this film,,Have been thinking BRZ or toyota 86 ,,Both of these cars have the same engine ,well the 2021models,the other thing about the top of the range BRZ is tire size,Gone from 17"to 18 inch with a 17" as a spare,,Yer don't know why either,,
Now want to wait for the 2022 model ..wonders . ? , is the same new motor offered to toyota,?
If you had a choice, which car would you buy and why,,both are about the same money here in Aussie land,,
Still pissed at Kia about the stinger all-wheel drive not being available in australia,
Thats what i really wanted,,but ifin it ain;t all wheel drive,, then the BRZ or toyota are better options,
mind the only reason i thought about the stunger is the high torque at 1500 revs, and all wheel drive,,
These cars mentioned are my choice as they look to me like a car,,not these cut off and square shapes; designers seem to think we want,,
and while i'm having a whinge ,,what with all these 4 wheel drive going truck size,my son just brought a trident , loverly car,,but need a step ladder to get in to the cab,and 7'foot tall to reach in to the back tray,,
yer nup not sure what they are thinking really..??

Btw no turbo means engine lasts longer
joemrp05
There are already ton of after market turbo kits that get 300-400whp on the old 2.0L. Excited to see what kind of numbers the 2.4L will get with an after market turbo.
Ben McFarlane
That may well be so however with the turbo all it will take is more boost and a retune and that power climbs again and again
fil1329
Subaru has a great AWD system......too bad they don't offer nice reliable inline 4......so u don't have to worry about head gaskets all the time
Mazda is the same......they don't learn from their mistakes like the rotory engine
Dennis Tate
Can you help me pass my GED MATH TEST
Ronk
Good explanation, but I don't know if I fully agree with you. 20% difference in torque is a lot. So they may as well could have put this non-turbo version of the 2.4 in the Ascent and call it a day?
emi bikers just in
Wow cant believe i watched this entire video, and even understanding it (as a dropout mechanical student 15years ago). Probably because u r a good lecturer hehehe.
So sacrifice 20% torque for throttle sensitivity and control. Its worth it allday anyday. This kind of setup is rare these days, it remind me of nsx type s back in the day
Wade Wilson
You remind me of Dr. Eric Berg DC when you filming in front of whiteboard. 😅🤔🤣

Q: Why doesn't the 2022 Subaru BRZ need a turbo?
A; Math
WagonWheelsRX8
The 2022 BRZ doesn't *technically* need a Turbo, but it would be a much more enjoyable car to drive with one.
Rampant Std
Eh, people are way to precious about the weight balance. Its not the end of the world to be fractionally nose heavy. It should make the back a bit more lose * translation - fun* while not losing much in handling. Any losses could be tweaked by proper suspension calibration.
100 lbs of turbo kit would yield double the gains AT THE WHEEL than the increase from 2.0 to 2.4L does AT THE CRANK. Stated 20% increase is more than a 30% increase vs the outgoing unit.
Just because the unit on hand has the turbo under the engine does not mean that it cannot be redesigned for a top mount turbo. Top mount should be preferable anyway since the heat turbos invariably produce will escape the engine compartment more easily. Routing lubrication would be simpler with a top mount turbo. Seems like the underside turbo is a mistake all around to me.
So all in all, it will be fine without a turbo. But it still is a disappointment that they continue to ignore what the market asks for. It wouldn't be such a low volume vehicle if they put a proper engine in it.
Mr. FaiFaiFai
Pffft BRZ is still slow.
But I rather drive a slow car fast than drive a fast car slow.
GPK
I just want to know how much work will it be to stick the 2.4L NA into my 2013 BRZ.
Johnny Apple
Most people can't even drive the car to its full potential anyways.

Can we swap the fa24 into our older gen 86?
Mamel's #26
Why not using a supercharger directly mounted on the top of the engine? More power and same response
Federico Riggio
This car is known in Europe as Toyota GT-86. It was developed to replace the Supra, but did not succeed. Therefore, the new Supra was developed.
Anyway, it is a very interesting car, not extremely fast but very agile, and precise, and well made, and also cheap... Only drawback: the back seats are skimpy.
Matthew Nelson
Does the higher compression ratio mean the new BRZ will be less boost friendly than the previous one?
Ghost Ball
It's cool to me that the new BRZ's stock dyno performance is nearly identical that of a typical Stage 2 tune on the old BRZ
It's like they actually listened for once or something
Ghost Ball

Waiting to see the line of turbo bois with broken engines
Joe Danko
Who did not notice the color code swap between Port Red and Direct Blue from the graphic to the labels? Sorry to nit-pick.
Ricardo F Mazzini
Would a higher compression engine require even higher octane gas?
PHANTOMELEPHANT
In brz/gt86 turbo conversions the turbo gets placed in front of the engine and not underneath it, so its not right to say that the new engine would need to get higher if a turbo would get addee to the engine, othwise the rest of the video is very good, thank you.
MotoGP Lounge
how come the new one is so damn ugly?
Jan Grzelakowski
But we want sututuutu 🥺
Mitchell Williams
I'm curious how the new engine would react to a supercharger.
Harry The Mouse
great video, i reserved a 2022 Limited BRZ for Fall delivery

torque only counts if you don't have enough gear ratios
CMDR Boom
Where is Japan pulling this outdated 'information' from that US buyers don't want or like turbo engines?! I can count how many pocket rockets that came to the US with subpar engines vs the JDM version because 'research' on 1.5 hands...

TBH, I wish they would've just had a premium trim with a flat 6, instead. 200HP flat 4 or 300HP flat 6. Simple.
Mark Barboza
The front end looks like a Miata.
Joe Debattista
What a load of rubbish just buy a Audi rs6
Gary Priest
So in my 2013 BRZ I have both types of injections nice 👍🏻
Gary Priest
I had thought that the Torque curve was about the gas mileage that’s the RPMs keep in lower while you’re on the highway at normal range of speed giving you better gas mileage
SharkByte
It now has as much horsepower as my stock 2003 350z lol
Lucas
I think the miata, also would benefit from torque. The platform is light, agile, and neutral ideally. I wish mazda had put the pre-skyactiv 2.5L I4 in place of the 2000cc and smaller engines. The platform can slow down a lot faster than heavier (awd and others), and probably use a little more tire on the edge. That torque is exit speed. The platform itself, in the case of the miata, and the BRZ, lends itself to the agility and great turn in, so if the brakes and tire can hold without too much nanny-dipping from DSC/TC its a win win adding power without changing the aspiration. I could see how a turbo might throw off the balance. The supra is a different class of car compared to the BRZ. Are you really adding 100+ lbs bolting a twinscroll, and adding an oil feed/drain, intercooler, and changing rad size, axles and pad compound. 0w20 anyone? Pistons arent much different, just less comp, with some different springs and a cam. Hmm wonder where subaru could find a 250+ turbo 2.0 engine with ecu and gearing. I think the big idea is that, EE is giving us the subaru line. WRC is sacred. the 22B shall always be the FHI legend in 555 livery, and ye shall not; with an svx, nor a legacy, or BRZ; ever supplant the impreza or its equivalent. RWD scoob means the king is dead. RWD STi is an STi but lighter without the xfer and diff. RWD is the darling of drivers cars, and subaru's identity is AWD. An rwd car that supplants the mighty WRX, WRX STi, or god forbid, a Type RA/S20x is a sin against marketing heritage and all those ideas get burnt down and sacrificed to the Pleiades. Its too heavy/expensive/complicated/hot. Thats BS. they want to keep taking the economy sales, lifestyle sales, and long term customers away from toy/H/USA. Also they know a 2 door RWD car would have a higher ceiling that the AWD cars with less weight, especially since the turbocharged drivetrains tend to respond so well to modification. Its just adding a trim level for the 500 or 5000 that would pay out thier nose for it. We must never forget AWD IS SUBARU FOREVER AND EVER. Apply the Subaru diff tech to a rear diff in an FR or MR. Give it a FA20DIT or 24. 23, with a new gen mitsu or ihi turbo. A 400 HP subaru hypercar would get eaten up in limited quantities. I think performance is just a tough sell in a year with no car show, no excitement, etc. I hope they come correct. The power is still lacking in this platform honestly.

I think this guy really just wants to start a math channel!!!!!

How the hell subaru can t make an n/a engine with 250 hp when honda did it 20 years ago with the s2000 ???

20% more displacement, 11% extra Hp and 18% extra torque. Wtf Subaru ? Why not at least 20% increase in both ?

Yeeh math!

How about compare to MX5 ND2?

This guy made me like maths for the first time in my life!
Rudy Oliver
why dont subaru make a flat 6 engine, it seems like a natural progression
TheDumpbin
10000% guarantee it doesn't make 228hp. Subaru way overreport hp. My 2017 made 162 hp on the dyno. I had it tuned, flattened out the huge torque dip and it now makes 188hp. My guess is the new car makes about that, and maybe if you tune it you will get 220hp or so. I love the car, just saying Subaru lie about hp. They must be reporting test stand hp with nothing attached, not wheel hp.
TheDumpbin
@CarsOverPeople ridiculously higher, false advertising really
CarsOverPeople
Ofc that 228 isn’t wheel horsepower... every car manufacturer advertises crank hp cuz it’s higher than wheel therefore giving them more clout.
Mr Torque
Wonder what kinda of power it will make with E85?
CarsOverPeople
With full bolt ons (headers, exhaust, CAI/filter, e85), AT LEAST 250hp and 210tq
Seve Garza
NA + sick shift + under 3000 lbs = 🙂

BRZ is MacPherson suspension which is cheap. It is for low budget car. The only success of MacPherson in the front suspension is Porsche.
jhrodriguez08
They don’t put the turbo engine to protect the WRX & STI, similar to Porsche protecting the 911 from the Cayman
Tai Minsen
I was agree with you Jason ........ untill they launched Yaris GR
Yaris GR basically prove both Tada and Toyoda are wrong all this time by underestimate Toyota's brand and potential future customers. Judging by how Yaris GR almost sold out in most countries then basically there are some people willing to pay for sportcar or hot hatch made by Toyota with Toyota's Turbo engine, not Subaru nor BMW
Matthew Gaither
The BRZ staying naturally aspirated while also getting a meaningful HP and Torque bump is extremely good news. Thank you for the in-depth look on why this was a great solution versus simply slapping a turbo on and calling it a day!

When calculating fuel loads per cycle , the engines off boost swept volume , increases in a consistent rate , completely irrespective of swept volume off boost and starting volume . At 14.7 psi boost on all turbo or super charged , the engines cranking swept volume is doubled , At 29.4 psi the engines cranking swept volume is tripled . I just love mathematics to bits , it is the sexiest , language , on earth , and ever used .The other thing with , consistently , stable , what ever type of engine to start with types of equations , for every 2 psi of boost , it exactly equals 1 extra point of compression . So starting at 10:1 , and feeding it 10 psi , will result in an effective compression ratio of 15:1 . A couple of drop dead sexy , equations to help guide your spark curve or map .

@14:21 port injection and direct injection are color coded incorrectly.

let me explain... there's is too much... let me sum up "Gearing matters as much as power/torque"
You Tube
200 hp is GARBAGE ...
Slap a turbo and give us about 300 hp and now we have something to have fun with.

I still think the new BRZ/GT86 are ugly af, the previous generation was hot.

Excellent presentation thank you

I always thought turbo engine requires high octane fuel. No?
Dylan Lewis
Honestly, I'm so grateful they're still producing and updating this platform. Small, affordable sports cars are never money-makers and fast becoming extinct. As long as the powertrain is responsive and fun to rev out, I think It'll be a great time. How a sports car feels when you're ripping it is more important than the numbers. My Miata taught me this over the course of driving lots of other high power vehicles.
123 World Peace 963
I won't pretend... I don't understand at all.
Can you simply advise me.... Is turbo charged boxer engine better for subaru forester? Or is subie forester better (more longevity) off without turbo? THANKS! 😄
CarsOverPeople
@123 World Peace 963 No problem :). Just remember, the more parts/technology a car has, the more things that could go wrong/fail.
123 World Peace 963
@CarsOverPeople you have answered my question. Thanks!
CarsOverPeople
Not sure what your exact question is but ANY engine that is turboed will be less reliable (especially in the long run) than a NA engine (in most cases).
destinationfer2
Never heard anyone argue so desperately for Subaru's minuscule gains!
What you feel in your chest? lmao
I can slap on a set of vr Goggles and swear i can feel motion in a rollercoaster VR game, but we all know were really going 0mph siting on a gamer chair. just..stop it... The BRZ is improved upon but a turbo and AWD would be ideal for Subaru's BRZ STi variant and as for Toyota a RWD Turbo for an GR86.
angel
as a current brz owner, i'll take anything i can get it, turbo or not lmao
