The Gordon Murray Automotive T.50s is the track-only version of their latest supercar. It has a 4.0L naturally aspirated V12 engine producing 720 horsepower, it weighs less than 900 kg, and it creates over 1500 kg of downforce. That's enough downforce to even drive upside down. Murray: “Designing the racing car’s aerodynamics has been extremely rewarding. My love for motorsport really fueled the development of this car. The aerodynamics are so effective that the T.50s would be capable of driving upside down, and could do so at as little as 175mph.”
GMA Press Release:
"Gordon Murray Automotive has announced a racing-focused version of the T.50 supercar that will be even lighter, faster, and more powerful. With all of the road-going T.50 supercars selling out within 48 hours of the global premiere, customer demand has turned to the 25 super-exclusive and highly-individual racing models.
Priced at £3.1m (before taxes) the racing variant - codenamed T.50s - weighs just 890kg, while its Cosworth GMA V12 engine develops even more power. The new car also features a 1,758mm-wide delta wing mounted to the rear of the car, which works with the rear-mounted fan, a new front splitter, underbody aerofoil and adjustable diffusers to generate more than 1,500kg of downforce - 170% of the weight of the car.
The new car’s historically-significant official name will be announced later this year at its global reveal. More than half of the exclusive production run has already been sold - before any details were released. Murray now expects interest to soar as prospective owners hear of the boundary breaking performance potential of the T.50s.
Professor Gordon Murray: “With an unwavering focus on performance, and free from road-going legislation and maintenance considerations, the T.50s will achieve astonishing performance on track, demonstrating the full extent of the car’s capabilities. We’ve thrown everything at pushing this car beyond the levels of anything that’s been done before - it’s a celebration of British engineering and our team’s extensive motorsport experience.”
The extensively re-engineered T.50s features hundreds of significant revisions for race and track use over the road-going T.50. The stripped-back interior highlights the track focus and contributes to the new car’s 94kg weight loss. This enhanced lightweighting and the car’s phenomenal downforce ratio will ensure the car performs like nothing else on a racing circuit."

This can maybe drive upside down, but it'd be marginal. The lift devices these cars use have typical L/D of about 3-4, so that 1500 kgf downforce will be producing something like 400 kgf of drag, which would need at least 400 kgf of normal force to supply the needed traction. You have 610 kg of maximum normal force and your engine is already close to max power counteracting drag, so you'd have about 400 kgf in either direction worth of lateral acceleration, which corresponds to a maximum steering angle deviationof about 0.11 degrees.

Seeing a car drive upside down would be an amazing publicity stunt. Very dangerous stunt given the speed needed and building the track wouldn't be cheap but I think it would be worth it.
I think this trick would be pretty easy with an RC car designed for this purpose. Driving up a wall would be doable too provided you had a ramp up to it and hit the ramp with enough speed.

I like that uncompromised vision of Gordon, he doesn't compromise road setup for track setup or vice versa. The main thing here which even you failed to mention in the T50 video where you felt the fan was overrated was the ride height -- the road car drives 5.5 inches off the ground so the venturi effect is not going to be anywhere near a race car. A race car like a DTM? I doubt if you could stick a finger underneath. What that does is, it makes the venturi effect and the role of the diffuser much, much stronger. That's where the fan really shows what it's got. A car like that is almost vacuumed to the ground. The fact that the T50s can get to 210 mph with almost twice its weight in downforce means it's remarkably aerodynamically efficient - for comparison, in a top speed run of the Senna, which makes much less downforce and more power, it got up to 170-180 mph easily, and then it hit a wall of drag and somehow just barely struggled past 200 mph. And you can't really drive that car well on the road - ride is super rough, the wing is a giant parachute, mpg is abysmal, getting the bottom scraped and damaging the vortex generators is too easy, R tires are useless in rain, and on and on it goes.

The road car mass is quoted at 985kg(dry most likely),whereas you have listed the track car at 890kg,how was this further reduction achieved ? Or did I miss something ?

  • bmahoney1568

    3 ай мурун

Except you treated downforce as static, which it is not as it relates to speed. You didn’t even mention at what speed those quoted downforce numbers were for, which is important since manufacturers often quote downforce at different speeds and then to make comparisons you need to normalize downforce to a speed?

    5 ай мурун

Yes, Newtons. F = mg, mass multiplied by gravity. You'll need much more than an equal amount of downforce. About 9.81 times more, actually. For a car that weighs 890kg to drive upside down it would need OVER 8,730.9N of downforce,. Almost 9kN, maybe? Because, gravity...

I love your white board calculations as always.. but of course we can not really take the 'maximum downforce' for any speed.. so that circle calculation would become a bit more complicated, since Df really is also a function of v. edit: Or maybe you did take that into account but thought it would be to much of a mess for the board

You have to make significant assumptions and simplifications to get produce your times round a circle. I accept that. However you are ignoring one signifcant factor. Downforce increases with the square of speed. So because the T50 is going (much) faster round the bend its downforce advantage will significantly greater than your figures show. The "Viper" probably will have less than its (assumed) 1.5g.

Lateral weight transfer in corners and tires working together by judicious use of spring rates and sway bars allow my Subaru to regularly pull, according to my datalogger, 1.5 gees peak in corners with no aero, on Bridgestone RE71Rs while autocrossing. So IF you would really drive upside down:
    - the fuel pump(s) would run dry, because there's no fuel anymore on the bottom except it's some kind of balloon system
    - oil pressure would drop, even if it's a dry sump system, because the oil would move to the cylinder heads/pistons and
    - oil would flow out of the crankcase ventilation system
    - coolant and brake fluid circuits would suck in air
    - feel free to continue
